If it doesnt I can take the bearings back and use that money on a alt that isnt as rusty. The bad bearing sound could also be from the ac idler pulley. Remove the ac belt and give the idler pulley a spin. It should spin smoothly. Swap that pigtail and have your alternator tested. Rust doesn't mean it's bad. Dec 29, 2019 · Wisconsin. Nov 22, 2003 · I have replaced the alternator recently and just yesterday replaced the waterpump. For some reason the alternator pulley does not line up with the fan pulley. It actually sits a little sideways, which causes the belt to rub on the pulleys. I have tried to use washers to adjust the alternator either way, but can't get it just right. Got the correct bearing today and reassembled the alternator. Works fine. There is a slight brush noise (only when turned by hand off the vehicle) but that may be due to new brushes, once they seat in the noise may go away. But no big deal, the alternator is operating perfectly. The torque for the pulley nut is 81 foot/pounds..

Answer (1 of 4): The pulley will squeak or slip which will cause intermittent variations of the alternator speed. I have had similar problems and when I went to a mechanic for evaluation, the mechanic showed me a seriously frayed pulley band. Assuming the noise is gone, then spin all your accessory pulleys for anything loud/odd. There will probably be a bit of play in the tensioner pulley but if i'ts smooth it's fine. Should be no perceivable play in the alternator pulley. You should be able to spin it and not hear a thing either.

This time I ordered another new belt, tensioner, as well as an upper idler pulley, a lower idler pulley, an alternator pulley, and an alternator pulley removal tool. Assuming the alternator pulley isn't lined up with the drive belt as it should be, or the alternator orientation is damaging little by little, it by and large makes a growling sound, meaning you might have an alternator issue. Jan 25, 2006 · Elon, either way you spin it, the flow of air is the same but not as efficient when spinning in the rotation not designed for. It is like turning you car fan 180 degrees on the pulley. It still is a suction fan but very inefficeint. I did that stupid mistake to a crane operator. It sounds as if the pulley may have seized (pretty rare) then snapped under load. Also when you're replacing the belt next time check your alternator pulley, its an overrun pulley and when you jam the alternator fan blades the pulley should only rotate in 1 way not both ways. This can also cause belt shredding. Also check your sub-frame around the PS-pulley and look for indications of them making contact/hitting. If it is the alternator not moving, you need to loosen the bolts holding it to the bracket and then slide it so the belt will go on. Did you simply cut the old belt off without loosening the alternator first?. It sounds like your shim washer isn't thick enough allowing the pulley to get jammed up against the housing of the alternator. Either this or the shim washer is too big in diameter and is binding up.
